Summary from Goodreads: When Cora’s mother whisks the family away for the summer, Cora must decide between forging her future in the glimmering world of second homes where her parents belong, or getting lost in the bewitching world of the locals and the mystery surrounding a lonely old woman who claims to be a selkie creature—and who probably needs Cora more than anyone else.

Through the fantastical tales and anguished stories of the batty Mrs. O’Leary, as well as the company of a particularly gorgeous local boy called Ronan, Cora finds an escape from the reality of planning her life after high school. But will it come at the cost of alienating Cora’s mother, who struggles with her own tragic memories?

As the summer wanes, it becomes apparent that Ronan just may hold the answer to Mrs. O’Leary’s tragic past—and Cora’s future.

Annie Cosby Confesses

Since LEARNING TO SWIM is my debut novel, there's plenty the book world doesn't know about me! Jayne assured me there was no better way to introduce myself than with a simple round of confessions. So, without further ado, here are some of my deepest, darkest secrets. (Be kind, some of these are embarrassing!)

1. I was so shy as a kid, when I won an award at the 6th grade science fair, my mom had to give my acceptance speech to an audience of very confused people who were expecting a 12-year-old!

2. I've seen the BBC mini-series version of Pride & Prejudice at least 30 times.

3. My boyfriend has an Irish accent. A real one!

4. I'm scared of spiders. Not like "Ew, don't let it touch me" scared, but "I saw a spider in the kitchen 3 weeks ago, will you go make me a sandwich because I can't go in there" scared.

5. I stuck my tongue to a frozen pole after watching that scene in A Christmas Story. Spoiler alert: It stuck.

6. My first crush was either Casper, when he turned into a real boy, or Michael on Barney.

7. When I was little, I was terrified of dogs. (I had recurring nightmares about the neighbors' dog!) To cure this, what did my parents do? They got us a dog! So now I'm obsessed with most things that even resemble a canine.

8. I read and reread the Anne of Green Gables pretty frequently, but I'm always secretly really offended when Anne talks about the spelling of her name and says, "A-N-N looks dreadful." That's my real name!!

9. I had mono for several months - so long that my friends started calling me "Mono." Don't worry, it's not contagious anymore!

10. Growing up in the landlocked Midwest meant I was fascinated by the faraway ocean ... and a little scared, which gave birth to Learning to Swim!

  3. Irish accents are quite appealing! You go girl! I feel the exact same way about spiders as you do. Ugh. And after watching A Christmas Story, I tried sticking my tongue to a pole, but it didn't stick. May have something to do with living in the South. But that was and is one of my favorite parts of that movie, so obviously I had to try! Learning to Swim has a really cute cover, and sounds good. I don't know that I would read it because I have had serious issues with underwater worlds and the inhabitants of those worlds, but because of our spider and pole similarities, I might just give it a shot!

  4. Thanks for commenting, guys! And Jaime - my tongue DID stick! My brother had to rip it off. Also, I've heard that comment before about readers being wary of underwater mythology! If you're wary, check out this girl's take: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/786551438?book_show_action=true

  7. Annie is a kindred spirit! She loves Anne of Green Gables AND the BBC version of Pride & prejudice. Because really, is there any other version?!

  9. I'm so glad I was able to take part in the cover reveal of this book! As I noted, I have a love-hate relationship with the cover, but the synopsis completely drew me.

Oh, and I'm really scared of spiders too. :/

  10. This book sounds super interesting and I'd love to read it. Plus, the MC has the same name as my dog Cora, who is my big baby <3

Love the confessions. I was terribly shy as a kid, still am, but I never had to worry about speeches! And don't worry, I am all out terrified of spiders! *shudders*

  11. I'm afraid like Annie is of certain types (well, sizes) of spiders. Mostly, though, her fear of spiders reminds me of mine of mice. I get stand-on-a-chair freaked out if I spot a mouse.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of books involving water creatures . . . but that's because most of the ones I've read were mermaid books (which don't grab my interest much). Selkies sound awesome, though, so I may have to try this one out. :)

    1. I've had 3 different people say that about water creatures in YA! So I understand your pain - BUT, I did have a reviewer say she was wary of it because of that at first, but turned out loving it. So I do hope you'll give it a try! :)

P.S. I haven't been tested yet by a mouse, but I have a feeling I'd react just like you!!
